ARTIST STATEMENT
This collection of images centres around my flatmate who is my muse, and who has questioned her sexuality and her idea of what it means to be a woman her whole life. Through this series I wanted to explore the way in which gender is portrayed to children and convey a sense of youthful femininity and innocence through a fashion editorial-style shoot. I decided to choose one statement piece, this lilac purple dress and make this the focal point of the series. The flowers enhance and compliment the garment and are a motif typically associated with femininity and womanhood. The subject's gaze is significant as it creates a sense of connection and is powerful but in a subtle way.
In the editing process I used split toning to bring out a slightly pink hue in the images in order to create subtle dream-like qualities. I also experimented a lot with colour in order to bring out the deep green of the background, whilst directing the audience's focus to the subject.
